Why It Matters
National Geographic Unique Lodges of the World member. Set within a 380-hectare private ecological reserve acting as a buffer zone between the Tambopata National Reserve and the Madre de Dios River. The Inkaterra Association (NGO) runs active conservation programs onsite. Award-winning organic black tea grown on property won the Medaille Gourmet Gold in 2023 and a silver medal at the 7th Annual Teas of the World Awards in 2024.
Built on the grounds of a former cacao and rubber plantation — once a Catholic medical mission in the 1950s — Inkaterra Hacienda Concepción sits 8 km down the Madre de Dios River from Puerto Maldonado, reachable only by motorized canoe. There's no road in. The lodge sits within 819 hectares of primary rainforest that buffers the Tambopata National Reserve, giving it access to serious wildlife territory: giant river otters at Lake Sandoval, caimans, howler monkeys, macaws, and clay licks visited by agoutis and peccaries. This isn't a pool-and-sundowner kind of place — it's for people who actually want to go deep into the Amazon and come back knowing something.

Rowing canoe on the on-property oxbow shaped lake. Spot hoatzins, flycatchers, and grey-necked wood rails. Also features the remains of the famous Fitzcarrald steamboat, whose history inspired Werner Herzog's Cannes-winning film 'Fitzcarraldo' (1982).

Canoe to Gamitana Creek and walk through the Inkaterra Association's model farm. Learn about sustainable community agriculture projects, and taste seasonal fruits and crops on site or later at meals.
Guided night walk through the Amazon rainforest to encounter nocturnal animals, frogs, insects, and experience the forest after dark — a completely different environment from daytime walks.
Walk 15–20 minutes to one of four clay licks on property. Observe wildlife from specially designed blinds — agoutis, monkeys, peccaries. Learn about mineral-licking behaviour and track animal footprints.
Motorized canoe to the Canopy Walkway Interpretation Center, then ascend to 29 meters above the forest floor and walk among the treetops for about 90 minutes across suspension bridges linking 8 observation platforms. Afterwards, the Anaconda Walk follows a 200-meter wooden bridge over a seasonal flooded marshland rich in amphibians and birds. Note: Anaconda Walk was temporarily unavailable — confirm status at booking.
Walk into the Tambopata National Reserve to reach the famous oxbow lake, then paddle by rowing canoe across the mirror-calm water. Spot endangered giant river otters (Pteronura brasiliensis), blue-and-yellow macaws, red howler monkeys, black caimans, and the giant paiche fish. Entrance fees included in all packages. Not recommended December–March (rainy season).
A trail of clues and challenges through the lodge grounds with prizes for the most skilled young explorers. Includes an Explorer Kit. Included in family packages.
