Why It Matters
Opened in 1914, it is Romania's most historically significant hotel — a front-row seat to every major event in Bucharest's 20th century. The hotel faces Revolution Square and the Romanian Athenaeum. It holds a 2025 Michelin Key and is #1 of 202 hotels in Bucharest on TripAdvisor. The Le Diplomate Ballroom is a listed national heritage monument.
Built in 1914 as a hospitality home for guests of the Romanian Royal Palace, the Athénée Palace has never really stopped being the most politically charged address in Bucharest. Spies, kings, and Gestapo officers once shared the lobby — today it is business travelers, culture tourists, and anyone who wants to sleep directly across from the Romanian Athenaeum. The hotel switched from Hilton to InterContinental on 1 January 2023 and earned a Michelin Key in 2025. Rooms were redesigned by interior architecture firm Alexander James, with hand-finished oak floors, Byredo toiletries, and pillow menus throughout.
