Burj Al Arab
Maximalist Arabian Gulf ultra-luxury. Bold, gold, and unapologetically audacious. The atrium alone is the world's tallest, clad in mosaic, marble and backlit aquamarine panels. Think Willy Wonka's factory, but with Hermès amenities and a Michelin-starred restaurant on the 27th floor.
Non-guests can access the hotel only with a reservation — book afternoon tea at Sahn Eddar (490 AED/person) for the most affordable way in, or the hotel tour with gold cappuccino at UMA Lounge (399 AED) to see more of the property
Why It Matters
Commonly referred to as the world's only '7-star' hotel — a label coined by a travel journalist and never officially dropped. Part of Jumeirah's Icons Collection, it sits on its own artificial island and is accessible only by private bridge, meaning you need a reservation just to set foot on the property. Staff-to-suite ratio is 8:1. Every suite is a two-floor duplex. Al Muntaha holds one Michelin star; Al Mahara hosts a pop-up by two-Michelin-star Chef Andrea Migliaccio. It is currently the most-Instagrammed hotel on the planet.
The Burj Al Arab is quite possibly the most over-the-top hotel in the entire world. A 321-metre sail-shaped tower built on its own man-made island 280 metres off the Jumeirah coast, the whole structure is covered in double-knit Teflon-coated fibreglass — and that's before you even get to the 24-karat gold leaf interiors. Every room is an all-suite duplex spread across two floors, with a private butler on call around the clock. It is the world's most-photographed hotel for good reason.
