Kahanda Kanda
Colonial-eclectic meets contemporary tropical. Polished concrete floors, Javanese joglo timber houses, four-poster beds draped in white linen, lily ponds flanking the open-sided dining pavilion, and an 80-meter saffron wall with windows cut to frame views of the jungle and lake. The atmosphere is quiet, genuinely serene, and resolutely adult — no kids under 12.
Ask for Sam, the hotel's driver, for day trips — guests rave about his knowledge and English is fluent
Why It Matters
One of the most design-forward small hotels in Sri Lanka. George Cooper still wanders the estate most mornings; the owner presence is real and the attention to detail is not just marketing copy. The estate grows its own herbs, vegetables and cinnamon. Recently unveiled a newly enlarged KK Spa (April 2026) with an unusually interesting treatment menu. A sister hotel, KK Beach, sits five miles away on the coast — guests can charge dining and activities there to their room.
A privately owned boutique hotel on a 14-acre working tea estate perched on a ridge above Koggala Lake, about 15km inland from the historic Galle Fort. Once the personal home of British interior designer George Cooper, the property was transformed into a small hotel by Australian architect Bruce Fell-Smith and has been expanding ever since. Now 17 individually designed villas and suites, 13 with private plunge pools, each decorated with antiques, Asian art and block-print fabrics that feel genuinely collected rather than staged.
