Kannawaen
Traditional Japanese ryokan with European furniture touches. Japanese-garden aesthetic, Noh theater, steam rising over tile rooftops. More family-and-group-friendly than intimate-couples ryokan. Hybrid hotel/ryokan rather than a pure minimalist retreat.
Book the Sora wing for panoramic city and bay views; it's the only wing where teppanyaki is cooked at your table for all meals
Why It Matters
One of the very few ryokans in Beppu with private on-site hot spring sources — both completely natural, never reheated or diluted. The on-site full-scale Noh theater stage (modeled on the National Noh Theater) is essentially unique among ryokans. Property sits within a 5-minute walk of the famous Beppu Hells (Jigoku) sightseeing circuit.
Sanso Kannawaen sits on a hillside in Beppu's Kannawa district — right in the middle of Japan's most steam-dense hot spring area. The 45,000 sqm property sprawls across a traditional Japanese garden with koi ponds, a thatched-roof teahouse, and a full Noh theater stage. Every one of the 50 rooms has its own private bath fed by 100% natural, undiluted sodium-chloride spring water from two on-site hot spring sources.

How you'll actually spend your days.
The top-floor communal bath facility — renovated August 2024 — features indoor baths, open-air baths, box steam baths, Japanese cypress baths, and ceramic baths. Panoramic views over Beppu city and bay from the open-air section. Gender-separated, not available for tattoo holders.
Every room has its own private bath (indoor Japanese cypress tub and, in most rooms, an outdoor tub) fed by 100% natural, undiluted sodium-chloride spring water from Kannawaen's two on-site sources. Usable 24 hours. The water can take on a rare milky blue 'Ao-Yu' color that changes day to day.
Umi Jigoku (Sea Hell) and Oniishibozu Jigoku are within a 5-minute walk of the property. The famous Jigoku circuit — boiling hot spring pools of various colors — is one of Japan's most unique sightseeing experiences, all accessible on foot from Kannawaen.
The 45,000 sqm property has a traditional Japanese garden with koi ponds, a waterfall, stone pagodas, and a thatched-roof teahouse (Bitokuan). A rare amount of garden space given the urban Beppu setting.
In-house boutique near the lobby stocking local Beppu crafts, sweets, teas, and property-exclusive goods. Good place to pick up Oita souvenirs without leaving the ryokan.
The on-site Noh theater stage is modeled on Japan's National Noh Theater and hosts periodic performances. The stage is visible from the lobby windows and illuminated at night. Guests staying in the Shinshoan hanare room are positioned directly adjacent to the stage. Wedding ceremonies and photo shoots can also be arranged at the theater.
The Special Suite Hanare has a private outdoor pool available for use from June through September. Swimwear rental is also available at the general pool facility.
