Why It Matters
One of the few Irish castle hotels that pairs genuine historic architecture (the original castle suites are in the 18th-century structure) with a legitimately award-winning restaurant. Executive Head Chef Daniel Willimont holds 2 AA Rosettes and won Ireland's Chef of the Year at the Gold Medal Hotel Awards in both 2024 and 2025. The spa won Gold Medal for Ireland's Four Star Hotel Spa Experience in 2022.
An 18th-century neo-Gothic castle on the banks of Lough Meelagh in County Roscommon, sitting on 50 acres of woodland. Once home to the Tennison family, it's been thoroughly restored and turned into a full-service luxury hotel with 85 rooms, a serious spa operation, and a fine-dining restaurant that earned its Executive Chef Ireland's Chef of the Year in 2025. It's genuinely remote — an hour inland from Sligo — but that's part of the appeal.

Authentic Castle Suites
Four named suites in the original castle structure: the Turlough O'Carolan Suite (named for the legendary blind Irish harpist buried nearby), the Tenison Suite, the Kingston Suite (top-floor with estate views and a marble freestanding bathtub), and the Lough Meelagh Suite (high ceilings, tall windows overlooking the lough). Each has a four-poster bed, antique period furniture, a Nespresso machine, Elemis amenities, bathrobes and slippers, under-floor heating, and his-and-hers sinks. Some feature cast-iron freestanding baths.
Four-poster kingCastle Tower Suite
The best room in the house — full stop. Set across two floors in the castle's iconic central tower, it has a ground-floor living room with vintage furniture and a striking skylight, and a separate upper bedroom with panoramic views of the estate and Lough Meelagh from a four-poster bed. The en-suite has a private Jacuzzi, his-and-hers sinks, a separate shower, and a full Elemis amenity kit. There's also a private dining area with a Nespresso machine and complimentary still and sparkling water.

These have more character than the classic rooms and are worth requesting if the suites are out of budget.
King or twinTraditional Castle Suites
Four suites with an extra layer of luxury: the finest antique furniture, cotton bathrobes, four-poster beds, and views of the estate. These sit in the newer castle addition but follow the same grand styling as the original wing. Standard suite amenities include temperature-controlled air conditioning, in-room electronic safe, HD television, and under-floor heating in the en-suite.
