Why It Matters
Kimpton's European flagship and first hotel outside the Americas. Housed in two 17th-century Golden Age buildings alongside a modern block, right next to Amsterdam Centraal Station. The super Lyan cocktail bar by award-winning Mr Lyan (of Lyaness fame) is a genuine destination on its own. The Little House — a full three-floor private suite in the childhood home of Dutch playwright P.C. Hooft — is one of the more unusual accommodation options in the city.
Kimpton De Witt opened in 2017 as Kimpton's first hotel in Europe — a gutsy renovation of a former Crowne Plaza that spans a sleek modern tower and a pair of original 17th-century Dutch Golden Age townhouses. Designer Jacu Strauss drew hard on Dutch design heritage: patterned lobby floor tiles, bird-shaped Atelier Areti bedside lamps, Delft-blue color pops, and Pols Potten gold-dipped parrot statues throughout. It works, mostly because the bones are good and the service culture actually feels Kimpton — warm, slightly irreverent, and genuinely pet-obsessed.

The hotel operates its own 1928 saloon boat, De Roerdomp — all teak, brass, and plush carpeting. Public tours depart daily at 10:30, 12:30, and 14:30, running 90 minutes and accommodating up to 10 guests. Guided by a local captain. Nespresso on board, soft throws for cooler days, and an onboard restroom.
Free use of bicycles for guests to explore Amsterdam's canal ring and neighborhoods at their own pace. Subject to availability — book ahead in peak season.
