A Victorian hunting lodge built in 1869, Knockinaam sits in its own private cove on the Irish Sea in the remote south-west corner of Scotland. Ten individually designed rooms, a 3 AA Rosette restaurant that changes its menu daily, and 30 acres of grounds stretching to a shingle beach — this is the kind of place where you come to properly disappear. Churchill and Eisenhower once met here to plan the D-Day landings. The cooking may have improved since.

Bay
The hotel's most romantic room. Features a queen-sized Victorian Half Tester Bed and sea views. If you're booking for a special occasion, this is the one. Sleeps two.
Queen (Victorian Half Tester)
Churchill
One of the largest rooms in the hotel, this is the actual room Sir Winston Churchill slept in during his wartime visit. Overlooks the gardens with a view to the edge of the bay and cliffs above the private cove. Sleeps up to three.
East
A snug, colourful queen-bedded room with ensuite bathroom featuring a luxurious bathtub and over-bath shower. Overlooks the pond and beautiful gardens. Compact but thoughtfully appointed. No dogs permitted in this room.

The largest of the standard rooms, with views over the pond and the sweeping driveway approach. Garden-facing rather than sea-facing. Sleeps up to three.
Hannay
Second-floor room with panoramic bay views. King-sized bed, ensuite with walk-in shower AND a Victorian roll-top bathtub, plus heated floors. A firm guest favourite for good reason. Sleeps two.
King
Hannay with Croft (Family Suite)
Hannay's king-bedded room linked to the adjacent twin-bedded Croft room, sharing a bathroom between them. Created specifically for families. The Hannay side has the roll-top tub and bay views; Croft adds the twin beds. Sleeps four.

Pond
A good-sized room that captures the morning sun and overlooks the pond and surrounding gardens. No sea views but pleasant garden outlook. Sleeps up to three.
Shingle Lodge
A self-contained cedar-clad cottage within the hotel grounds with two super king-size or twin bedrooms, both ensuite, both with Irish Sea views toward Northern Ireland. Fully equipped kitchen, wood burner, 300-thread Egyptian cotton linen, and log store included. Guests can dine at the main hotel restaurant (booking recommended). Sleeps four.

Double aspect sea views make South one of the brightest rooms in the house — it catches both morning and afternoon sun, plus the Irish Sea sunsets. Sleeps up to three.

The hotel provides detailed walking guides for several routes directly accessible from the grounds, including: Knockinaam to Portpatrick village (2.2 miles / ~1.5 hrs), Portpatrick to Killantringan Lighthouse (6 miles / 3.5 hrs), and Dunskey Glen (4 miles / 2 hrs).
Guided cycling options available through Galloway Cycling Holidays nearby. The area is also home to 5 of the 7Stanes mountain bike trails (Kirroughtree being the closest).
The hotel offers packaged golf breaks with complimentary rounds at Trump Turnberry — the Ailsa Course (host of four Open Championships, ranked #1 in UK & Ireland) for 7-night stays, and the King Robert the Bruce Course for 4-night stays, both with Head Chef Tony Pierce as playing companion.
30 acres of landscaped gardens and grounds to explore, including the hotel's working polytunnel kitchen garden where 70% of the restaurant's vegetables and herbs are grown.
The hotel has its own on-site helipad, allowing guests to arrive by helicopter. Arrangements must be made directly with the hotel in advance.
The hotel's own shingle/pebble beach on the Irish Sea is accessible directly from the grounds. Swimming in the sea, beachcombing, or just sitting with the view — no other guests from another property in sight.
Fishing arrangements can be made via local partners including Stranraer & District Angling Association, Alba Game Fishing, and charter boats Dawn Venture and Lucky Dip II operating from nearby Portpatrick.
