Kohanyu
Meditative, audiophile-forward ryokan. Think minimalist Japanese interiors, handmade Tosawashi paper walls, concert-hall acoustics, and lake views — not a single TV in sight (by design). This is very much a place for couples or adults who want to unplug completely and are curious about world-class vintage audio.
Bring your own CDs — the property encourages it and the sound systems will make your favourites sound like a live performance
Why It Matters
Michelin Guide Hotel Selection 2025. One of the few inns in Japan built entirely around audiophile listening — each of the four rooms is equipped with a different set of legendary vintage speakers (JBL Paragon, Sonus Faber Lumina, Tannoy Monitor Gold, ALTEC A5) paired with period-correct amplifiers. The hot spring is an isotonic sodium-chloride source, considered one of the rarest spring types in Japan. The property also uses spent cooking oil as biomass fuel for its boiler system.
Kohanyu is a four-room adults-only inn on the shore of the Monobe River in the mountains of northeastern Kochi Prefecture. The concept revolves around three obsessions: a rare isotonic natural hot spring, organic Satoyama cuisine grown on-site, and some of the finest vintage audio equipment in Japan. Every room has its own private open-air hot spring bath and a purpose-built listening space tuned to a specific legendary speaker system. Dinner and breakfast are included in the rate, and the property accepts no more than four groups per night.

On Property
How you'll actually spend your days.
The restaurant's audio system — a 1940s Western Electric WE124B power amplifier driving JBL 375 speakers — is exclusively available to overnight guests in the evenings. The property curates listening experiences alongside dinner and post-meal time in the lounge.
Open to non-staying visitors Thursday through Monday (11:00–15:45 for the bath, 11:00–15:00 for the cafe). Day-trippers can use the shared hot spring baths, enjoy organic food from the cafe, and sit on the lakeside terrace.
Each room has a private terrace or wood deck overlooking the Monobe River lake. The property manages every tree on its 10,000 sqm estate for aesthetic framing of seasonal views. Guests can sit outside with coffee, listen to the wind and birdsong, and catch morning mist or, on clear nights, a sky full of stars.
Each room is purpose-built around a legendary vintage speaker system with a matched period amplifier. Guests are encouraged to bring personal CDs. The property's owner is one of Japan's most serious audiophiles and has designed room shapes, wall angles, furniture, and materials entirely to maximise sonic performance. Listening feels like a private concert in a custom hall.
Amenities & Practical Info
The details that matter for planning.
The property cultivates its own organic vegetable garden, which supplies the kaiseki kitchen directly. Ingredients are harvested the same day as service.
The 10,000 sqm lakeside property is extensively landscaped. Every tree is individually selected and maintained by the owners for seasonal beauty and framing of the river views.
There are no TVs anywhere at Kohanyu — in rooms or public areas. This is a deliberate design choice to encourage engagement with nature, music, and the onsen.
An online shop (kohanyu.theshop.jp) selling property-related goods.
The hot spring heating system runs on spent deep-frying oil repurposed as biomass fuel, eliminating carbon dioxide emissions from this process and converting food waste into renewable energy.
