Kosenda Hotel
Mid-century modern meets Peranakan Indonesian. Think warm wood, clean lines, vintage rotary phones on shelves, bookshelves stuffed with paperbacks, and a goldfish pond in the garden courtyard. Feels nothing like a corporate Jakarta hotel.
The Awan rooftop bar (Tue–Sun, 16:00–21:00) gives you a split-screen Jakarta view: gleaming malls on one side, local neighborhoods on the other. Go at dusk.
Why It Matters
Indonesia's first true design hotel — Tablet Hotels and Michelin Guide recognized. The founder Ruben Kosenda assembled a local-international team that pulled together influences from Danish modernist furniture to Betawi heritage houses. Natural wood is the thread that ties it all together. The three F&B outlets (Waha Kitchen, The Awan rooftop bar, 127 Cafe) each have a distinct identity and draw non-guests off the street.
Kosenda Hotel is Central Jakarta's most compelling design boutique — 58 rooms stacked into a building that blends 21st-century architecture with mid-century modernist furniture and traditional Indonesian Betawi house influences. Founded by local entrepreneur Ruben Kosenda, every corner is deliberately composed: upcycled materials, natural wood, vintage objects, and handcrafted batik yukatas in the rooms. The food and drink scene here — three distinct outlets across ground floor and rooftop — is genuinely worth coming for, even if you're not a guest.
