Krone Säumerei am Inn
Historic Alpine boutique with a contemporary, art-forward interior. Cozy rather than grand. Strong sense of place — think local blacksmith-made cutlery, sgraffito murals, and artwork by names like Not Vital and Albert Steiner throughout the corridors.
Book La Chavallera at the same time as your room — the restaurant fills up independently of the hotel and is open Tuesday–Saturday evenings only
Why It Matters
La Chavallera, the in-house fine-dining restaurant, earned a Michelin star just three months after opening in mid-2022. Chef James Baron previously helmed Amber at the Mandarin Oriental in Hong Kong, ranked in the Top 50 restaurants in the world. The hotel is one of the very few places in the Upper Engadin where the dining genuinely drives people to book a room — not the other way around.
Opened in 1565 as a trading post and coaching inn along the Engadin valley's old muleteer routes, the Krone has been thoroughly reinvented without losing any of its bones. British chef James Baron and his Thai-Swiss wife Natacha took over and stripped things back to the essentials: 18 rooms in native larch and serpentine stone, a Michelin-starred fine-dining restaurant, a more casual Alpine bistro, and a sauna tucked into the historic fabric of the building. The Inn river runs right outside.

A ticketed seasonal event led by Natacha Baron, trained tea sommelier, paired with afternoon tea snacks by James Baron. Scheduled as part of the hotel's events calendar. CHF 39/person with tea; CHF 55/person with champagne.
The hotel prepares a custom-filled picnic basket with local produce. Recommended fireplaces and BBQ spots include Val Chamuera, Pradatsch (near the golf course), Arpiglia waterfall, and the Guardaval ruins. Bookable via the hotel contact form.
Direct access from the hotel to the celebrated Albula Trail, one of Switzerland's most scenic cycling and hiking routes crossing the Engadin valley. A top draw for guests in summer.
Free bikes are available to guests. The hotel has a bike garage, tools, and e-bike charging. A partnership with Colani Sport in the village provides additional equipment rental options.
The Krone doubles as a gallery, with works by internationally recognised artists including Not Vital, Albert Steiner, and Spescha displayed throughout the property. Architecture by the renowned Engadin firm Ruch & Partner Architekten.
The Engadin Ski Marathon cross-country ski trail network — around 230 km of prepared trails — runs past the property in winter. The hotel is an ideal base for Nordic skiers.
The hotel offers a golf package with unlimited rounds on two nearby courses: the open, wind-exposed Samedan layout and the more undulating Zuoz/Madulain terrain. Both courses are within a short drive. The Engadin Golf Samedan & Zuoz-Madulain complex is about 4.3 miles away.
