Kruger Shalati - The Train on The Bridge
Afro-chic heritage rail. Handcrafted local furniture, steampunk-adjacent design details, and strong cultural storytelling throughout. Named for Shalati, a 19th-century African warrior queen of the Tebula clan. The look is contemporary African luxury with 1920s rail safari DNA.
Carriage rooms toward the middle of the train reportedly have the widest, most unobstructed river views
Why It Matters
The world's only luxury hotel permanently stationed on a historical bridge above a Big Five wildlife river. First African property to receive 2 MICHELIN Keys. Named by Lonely Planet as a Unique Stay for 2026. Opened in 2020 on the exact spot where park visitors slept in train carriages during the very first Kruger overnight excursions in 1923.
Kruger Shalati is exactly what it sounds like: a restored train permanently parked on the historic Selati Bridge above the Sabie River, inside Kruger National Park. Floor-to-ceiling glass walls in each of the 24 Carriage Suites mean hippos, elephants, and the occasional leopard become your room's daily floor show — no game drive required. It's the only property within a South African National Parks conservation area to hold 2 MICHELIN Keys, marking the first time MICHELIN awarded those accolades anywhere on the African continent.

On Property
How you'll actually spend your days.
A 360-degree wrap-around screen cinema located at the nearby historic Kruger Station (approximately 0.4 km from the lodge). Additional charge may apply.
A bespoke overhanging pool and deck positioned high above the Sabie River on the bridge itself, aligned with the floor level of the train. One of the most photographed spots at the property. Hippos, crocodiles, and elephants are commonly spotted metres below. Included for all guests.
Two game drives per day in open safari vehicles (OSVs), led by knowledgeable rangers. Game drives take place on public Kruger roads — this is not a private concession. Big Five sightings are common; guests frequently report leopard, lion, elephant, hippo, and crocodile encounters. All drives included in room rates.
Guided walking safaris available for guests who want to experience the bush on foot. Led by Kruger Shalati's professional rangers.
Passive but constant. Floor-to-ceiling glass walls in every Carriage Suite look directly down to the Sabie River, where elephants bathe, hippos surface, baboons cross the bridge, and birds arrive to drink throughout the day and night.
A high-definition live stream webcam with night vision covers the wildlife around Kruger Shalati. Available to browse pre-trip via the official website.
The Skukuza Golf Course is approximately 5.2 km from the property. Not on-site, but frequently referenced as a nearby day-activity for guests.
