Kruisherenhotel Maastricht
Historic Gothic meets Dutch modernism. Dramatic ceiling heights, stained glass, original wall and ceiling frescoes — all set against ultra-contemporary furniture. Design-forward and romantic without being stuffy. The contrast is the whole point.

Why It Matters
Winner of the Dutch Hotel Award 2017 and a long-standing member of Design Hotels, the Kruisherenhotel is one of the boldest adaptive reuse projects in European hospitality. The Gothic church conversion — with its glass elevator, mezzanine restaurant and original frescoes — is genuinely unlike anything else in the Netherlands. Construction of the original cloister began in 1440; the transformation into a hotel commenced in 2000. It's held Conde Nast Traveler recognition and a Gault Millau listing for Spencer's restaurant.
A 15th-century Gothic monastery and church in the middle of Maastricht's old town, converted into one of the Netherlands' most architecturally dramatic hotels. The nave of the original church is now the hotel lobby, bar and reception, with a glass elevator connecting it to the mezzanine restaurant floating inside the gothic chancel. The 60 rooms are spread across three structures: the original monastery, a contemporary wing called Casa Nova, and the Gatekeeper's Residence. Interiors by Henk Vos, furnished with pieces by Le Corbusier, Ingo Maurer and Philip Starck. Serious design hotel territory, and the only five-star property in the Maastricht region.
