Kurulu Bay
Eco-conscious tropical modernism. Quiet and deliberate — the kind of place where the architecture steps back so the lake and jungle can do the talking. Not a party hotel. Not a beach resort either, despite the coast being five minutes away.
Book the Treehouse category for the best elevation and lake views — they're perched on the hillside with sightlines over both pool and water.
Why It Matters
One of a very small number of Sri Lankan eco-resorts to earn a Michelin Key. The architectural story is real: every structure here — from vernacular thatched cottages to raised concrete treehouses — was designed to work with the existing landscape rather than against it. The resident Ayurvedic doctor, Doctor Pushpa, is a third-generation practitioner who presses her own medicines from local forest plants.
Kurulu Bay — Sinhalese for 'bird island' — sits on the edge of Koggala Lake, Sri Lanka's largest natural lake, about 5 minutes inland from Ahangama Beach. It's an eco-resort of genuine architectural pedigree: the whole property is built around the Kurulu House, designed by highly regarded local architect Channa Daswatte, with the 14 suites and cottages added by Shanghai-based award-winning firm A00. Think tropical modernism done thoughtfully, not showily. Two pools, a serious spa with an in-house Ayurvedic doctor, daily yoga with lake views, and a sea-to-table restaurant called The Kitchen. The property holds One Michelin Key.
