Ecca Lodge
Modern, intimate, family-forward safari lodge with funky-industrial design touches. Relaxed and unpretentious rather than formal. Conservation runs through everything.
Book a Private Vehicle Suite even if you're a couple — the exclusivity of your own guide and vehicle is worth every rand
Why It Matters
One of the Eastern Cape's top malaria-free Big Five reserves, where the family accommodation is actually designed for families rather than just tolerated. Three Private Vehicle Suites each come with an exclusive guide and vehicle. The reserve spans 30,000 hectares with both black and white rhino — rare anywhere, let alone malaria-free.
Kwandwe Ecca Lodge is a six-suite safari lodge inside Kwandwe Private Game Reserve, sitting on rolling spekboom hills with views over a dense valley and a dramatic escarpment of shale cliffs. The design is best described as funk-meets-futuristic-farmhouse: wood panelling, mesh-covered stone gabion walls, and pagoda-style corrugated iron roofs that somehow feel more chic than rough. Three of the six suites are dedicated Private Vehicle Suites for families, each coming with their own guide, tracker, and vehicle — a genuinely rare setup that gives parents full scheduling flexibility without sacrificing the communal lodge atmosphere.

How you'll actually spend your days.
The reserve's private airstrip doubles as a fenced, tarmacked running track. A guide accompanies you for safety. Unconventional but surprisingly effective.
A hands-on introduction to the South African braai tradition, with a grounding in technique and a proper meal at the end of it.
Rangers transform into chefs during morning and afternoon game drive stops, producing sundowner tapas and bush breakfasts in the field. Weather-dependent; specialised stops can be discussed at booking.
Fish for bass in the still waters of Galpin Dam or target yellowfish and catfish in the pools and eddies of the Great Fish River. Popular with children and can be tailored to timing and interest.
Join the Kwandwe Rhino Conservation Trust on rhino darting and notching expeditions. Available May–September only, and limited participation keeps the experience genuinely exclusive.
A dedicated kids' space with board games, scavenger hunts, kite building, beading workshops, cooking classes, sand art, and eco-educational games on the lawn. Every evening ends with a traditional African bedtime story. Children also receive an animal checklist and activity book on arrival.
Morning and afternoon game drives in open 4x4 safari vehicles with an armed ranger and tracker team. Morning drives begin at dawn as predators finish their nocturnal hunts; afternoon drives catch wildlife coming to the river to drink. Luxury Suite guests share a vehicle (max 6); Private Vehicle Suite guests have their own exclusive vehicle, guide, and tracker.
Guided walks with armed ranger and tracker. Choose between big game tracking (white rhino, black rhino, elephant, buffalo) for the adrenaline hit, or a slower flora-and-fauna walk through dense euphorbia bush. Walks typically run 3–4 hours in the cooler early morning.
