La Almunia del Valle
Quiet, personal, sustainability-led. Traditional slate floors and terracotta tiles mix with contemporary art, leather chairs, and woven hangings. The Moorish roots of the place (an 'almunia' was a Moorish summer estate) show in the water channels, secluded terraces, and olive and chestnut groves. Owners Patricia Merino and José Manuel Plana are hands-on and genuinely enthusiastic about helping guests explore the area. This is not a party hotel.
Book dinner at least 24 hours before arrival — the kitchen operates a strict zero food-waste policy and won't accommodate walk-in dinner requests
Why It Matters
Awarded 1 Michelin Key in 2024. Ranked #1 hotel in the Monachil/Sierra Nevada National Park area on TripAdvisor with 612+ reviews. One of Spain's leading sustainable boutique properties — holder of the European Charter for Sustainable Tourism in Protected Areas. The dinner alone is reason enough to stay: a five-course house menu built on Sierra Nevada beef with Designation of Origin, Andalusian coastal fish, and homegrown cold-press olive oil.
La Almunia del Valle is a small owner-run eco-boutique hotel built into a hillside above the village of Monachil, 8 km from Granada's historic centre. The property is a restored traditional Granada 'cortijo' — a mountain farmhouse — with flat, walkable stone rooftop terraces that are its most arresting feature. Everything here is tied to the Sierra Nevada National Park: the pool water comes straight off the mountain, breakfast uses produce from the hotel's own orchards and olive groves, and hiking trails start right at the door.

One of the most popular hikes in Granada province starts right at the hotel's doorstep. The hotel staff can brief you on routes, difficulty levels, and conditions.
The hotel provides personalised advice on hiking routes departing from the hotel or further into the Sierra Nevada National Park, from easy valley walks to high-altitude routes. Staff are well-versed in responsible and eco-friendly trail access.
On-request private transfers to/from Granada city centre, the Alhambra, bus and train stations, and the airports of Granada and Málaga. Rates quoted directly by the hotel. Essential for those who don't want to deal with Granada city driving and parking.
On clear nights in spring and summer, the rooftop terraces offer impressive stargazing away from city light pollution. No organised programme — simply walk out onto your terrace or the hotel's common outdoor areas.
