The Bastidon suite has its own private garden and direct access to the pool — worth the premium for a special occasion

Why It Matters

This was Alain Ducasse's personal country retreat before he opened it to travelers. It holds a Michelin Red Star and a Michelin Green Star — the latter for its commitment to sustainable, garden-driven cooking. Just 13 rooms total make it one of the most intimate Michelin-star hotel experiences in France.

Alain Ducasse spotted this 18th-century stone bastide from his motorcycle while touring Provence in the early 1990s, bought it from a master potter in 1994, and eventually opened it to guests. Today it's a 4-star inn with 11 rooms and 2 suites spread across the main building and garden pavilions, set in 4 hectares of private parkland with lavender, cypress trees, and century-old olive trees. The Michelin-starred restaurant — holding both a Red Star and a Green Star for sustainable gastronomy — drives a lot of the allure, but the whole place genuinely feels like staying at a well-connected friend's country house rather than a luxury hotel.

Bastidon Suite

The crown jewel. You enter through a massive ancient wooden door into a private garden courtyard ringed with flowers. Inside: a huge living room with designer furniture and original artwork, a large bedroom with a king-size bed, and a bathroom that guests consistently describe as extraordinary. It has direct private access to the pool and its own enclosed garden. If there's a room to splurge on here, this is it.

Classic Double Room

Most of these rooms are in the main building. Open-plan bathrooms, carefully chosen antique and travel-sourced furnishings, and the general sense of a well-loved family house rather than a hotel room. Quiet, air-conditioned, with premium bedding.

Junior Suite

Located in the garden pavilions. These suites add a proper sitting area with a fireplace and a private terrace. Good for longer stays — the fireplace makes the off-season feel genuinely luxurious.

Potiron Room
Standard Room

Potiron Room

The smallest and most characterful room in the house. Set on the second floor of the main 18th-century building with a mezzanine duplex layout — the bedroom is up a small internal staircase. Think stone walls, Ducasse's collected objects, and an open-plan bathroom. It's cozy, not spacious. But you're essentially sleeping inside history.

Kitchen garden tourComplimentary

The nearly 2,000 m² organic kitchen garden that supplies the restaurant is open to guests. You can stroll through, chat with the gardener, and see what's growing. Chefs come out daily to pick herbs. It's a genuine farm-to-fork setup rather than a decorative gesture.

Picnic baskets (Alain Ducasse)

The hotel prepares picnic baskets by Alain Ducasse for guests heading out to the gorges, lake, or lavender plateau. A proper Provençal picnic, not an afterthought.

Water activities
Electric boat outing on Lac de Sainte-Croix

The hotel operates its own fully electric boat named 'Estelle' (named after the gold star that has hung above the village of Moustiers since the 17th century). The boat runs outings, breakfasts, and dinners on the stunning turquoise lake, just 10 minutes from the property. Silent, environmentally friendly, and genuinely one of the standout experiences in the Verdon.

Kayaking, rafting, and water sports (nearby)

The Gorges du Verdon and Lac de Sainte-Croix (both within 20 minutes) offer rafting, kayaking, windsurfing, canoeing, and catamaran sailing. The hotel can point you toward the right outfitters.
