La Casa del Presidente
Warm, historically loaded luxury. The architecture is solid 1970s Castilian — stone bones, high ceilings, no fuss. Rooms lean classic with some modernist touches, decorative fireplaces in every room, and each named after a democratic value (Peace, Dialogue, Courage). Feels like a private house, because it was one. Check-in happens at Suárez's actual desk.
Ask for a suite with Wall views — the suites on the upper floor look directly onto Ávila's medieval wall and some overlook the pool courtyard
Why It Matters
Suárez reportedly used this house for clandestine meetings during the Spanish Transition — including a secret meeting with Communist Party leader Santiago Carrillo to negotiate the legalization of the PCE. The president's office still has the original bookcase with a hidden escape door. Restaurant Caleña earned a Sol Repsol and entered the 2025 Michelin Guide.
La Casa del Presidente is a 10-room, five-star boutique hotel set inside the former private home of Adolfo Suárez, Spain's first democratically elected prime minister after the Franco dictatorship. Built in the 1970s and tucked against the interior of Ávila's UNESCO-listed medieval wall, the building passed to the Ortega family (founders of Fontecruz Hotels) in the late 1990s and reopened as the city's first five-star property. It's the only hotel in Ávila's walled historic centre with an outdoor pool — and yes, you can literally reach out and touch the wall stones from the garden.

Two structured tasting menus at restaurant Caleña: Rocalla (13 courses, €90) and Trebolillo (16 courses, €115). Focused on seasonal local products and traditional Castilian recipes revisited. Bookable standalone or as part of the Gastro Experience hotel package.
The hotel's walled garden with outdoor pool is the only one of its kind within Ávila's historic fortified centre. Hammocks, cocktail service, and direct access to the medieval wall stones. Private barbecue and romantic picnics can be arranged.
Guests check in at Adolfo Suárez's original desk in the preserved private study. The room includes his original bookcase from the 1970s and a hidden escape door built into the shelving — reportedly used during sensitive political meetings of the Spanish Transition.
Guided tasting in the house's original cellar, led by expert sommeliers. The cellar stocks wines from local Cebreros DO (El Tiemblo and El Barraco), classic Spanish references, and single-varietal and blended Pinot Noir from the Ortega family's Alta Pavina winery in Valladolid.
