Pierre Gagnaire, one of the world's most celebrated chefs (16 Michelin stars across his global restaurants), put his name on the in-house restaurant Gaya. That alone makes this a destination. Perched on a natural cliff overlooking the Atlantic and the islands of Ré, Aix, and Oléron, La Grande Terrasse is a 4-star MGallery boutique hotel in the Belle Époque seaside town of Châtelaillon-Plage — about 15km south of La Rochelle. Entirely renovated in 2017, its 72 rooms lean into natural materials (linen, cotton, raw wood, steel) with blue-toned corridors and large windows that frame the sea. Plage de Châtelaillon is a five-minute walk from the hotel. A back gate from the grounds gives quick access to a small public beach area. The property also has a private beach zone.
The hotel encourages cycling as the coastal terrain around Châtelaillon-Plage is flat and well-suited to it. The concierge can advise on routes toward La Rochelle or along the coast.
