La Guardia Hotel
Boho-chic minimalism meets barefoot Mediterranean. Think calm neutral tones, custom-crafted furniture, acoustic walls, and a terrace that faces the Tyrrhenian Sea. The vibe is design-forward but genuinely laid-back — the kind of place where aperitivo at 6pm is non-negotiable and guests are encouraged to go exploring.

Why It Matters
Built directly on top of a granite cave at the edge of Giglio Porto, with some spaces literally carved into the rock. It's one of the most design-considered properties in the Tuscan islands, owned and operated by people who actually live and love the island. Their 70-bottle wine list draws exclusively from small Mediterranean island producers.
La Guardia is a 27-room boutique hotel perched above an ancient granite cave at the end of Giglio Porto's harbour — one of the more remote corners of the Tuscan Archipelago. Opened in 2019 by former ad-world couple Flaminia Pérez del Castillo and Flavio Caprabianca, it's a complete renovation of a 1950s hotel, redesigned by an international team (Block722 from Greece-Norway, Rosario Magariños from Uruguay) into a clean, boho-chic coastal retreat. Micro-cement floors, cedarwood, natural textiles, and a plastic-free ethos throughout — it earns its ISO14001 environmental certification. No pool, but the private beach club is right below.

How you'll actually spend your days.
Staff can arrange cellar-hopping tasting tours of Giglio's Ansonaco wine — the island's distinctive white grape variety grown on sea-facing terraced vineyards. Not advertised widely but available on request.
Gigliese cookery classes available for groups of four to seven people at the hotel. Learn local island cooking techniques using seasonal ingredients from the hotel's kitchen garden.
Boat hire can be arranged for pleasure trips around the island's coves and sea stacks.
Staff can organise scuba diving excursions around the island, which has some of the clearest water in Italy. Submerged caves and wrecks in the surrounding Tyrrhenian waters.
Complimentary snorkeling available — the hotel is a short walk from some of the best snorkeling spots in the Tuscan Archipelago.
The hotel can help arrange e-bike rentals for exploring the island's untouched terrain. Given the island has no need for cars, this is one of the best ways to reach cliff-top vineyards and remote beaches.
The island has around 50km of unpaved trails across dramatic coastal scenery, granite cliffs, and terraced vineyards. Staff can provide route guidance. The hotel even hosts seasonal yoga & trekking retreat combos.
Guests get complimentary, unlimited access to the hotel's exclusive beach club — a decked terrace above a secluded cove of golden sand and smooth coastal rocks, with reserved sun beds. Non-guests cannot access it.
La Guardia's parent company GreyRock hosts a non-competitive short film festival for young directors under 25, held at the hotel. A genuinely unusual cultural event for a small island property.
