Why It Matters
Tablet Hotels-listed B&B run by Arlette Laude, an interior design consultant whose two completely distinct rooms have been extensively featured in the French national press. It sits in Pontarlier, the historical capital of absinthe, 20 minutes from the Jura ski slopes and straddling the Swiss border corridor between Basel and Geneva.
Two rooms. That's it. La Maison d'à Côté occupies the top floor of a handsome 19th-century building in central Pontarlier, spread across a 200m² apartment with parquet floors and beautiful carved woodwork. Host Arlette Laude is a former restaurateur and working interior design consultant — and it shows. The two rooms look nothing alike: one leans into old-world charm with a marble fireplace and antique furniture, the other goes clean and contemporary with a graphic orange-and-anthracite palette. Breakfast alone is worth the trip.
