La Posta Vecchia
Grand aristocratic villa meets Pellicano chic. Old-world gravitas balanced by forward-facing Baroque elegance. Think sleeping in a museum curated by a billionaire — but warmer, and with better cocktails.
The basement Roman museum is open to the public, not just hotel guests — mention it when you arrive and ask for a private tour
Why It Matters
Getty's original art collection and antiques remain in situ throughout the hotel. Beneath the foundations lies an excavated 2nd-century BC Roman villa with a museum open to guests and the public. The restaurant Da Aurelio (formerly The Cesar, which held a Michelin star) carries on the tradition of serious Italian coastal cooking. A Leading Hotels of the World member and Green Globe-certified property.
A 17th-century palazzo on the Tyrrhenian coast built for the noble Orsini family, bought and packed with antiquities by J. Paul Getty in the 1960s, and now run by the family behind Hotel Il Pellicano. Twenty-one rooms, each furnished with Getty's actual antiques and 17th-century tapestries, sit above a genuine 2nd-century BC Roman villa — still partially intact in a basement museum. This is genuinely one of Italy's most singular places to sleep. The Pellicano family has updated the vibe without stripping the soul: still aristocratically understated, still a world away from spa-resort excess.
