La Reine Jane
Arty, cinematic, and low-key cool. This is a place for design obsessives and film buffs who want character over comfort points. Rooms are small but intensely individual. The vibe hovers between artists' residency and casual seaside inn — with better music than either.
Ask the team to assign your room — they know each designer's personality well and can match you to one you'll love. Or keep it a surprise.
Why It Matters
Every one of its 14 rooms was designed by a celebrated European designer, all connected to the annual Design Parade festival at Hyères' Villa Noailles — making this a living showcase of contemporary French design. The building also has genuine cinematic history as a backdrop in Godard's Pierrot le fou (1965).
La Reine Jane has sat on the Ayguade harbor since the 1950s, and the white façade and indigo sign out front are as unchanged as when Jean-Luc Godard filmed Belmondo and Anna Karina here for Pierrot le fou in 1965. Inside, though, owners Lisa and David Pirone handed each of the 14 rooms to a different designer — all drawn from the Villa Noailles' Design Parade festival — and let them go wild. The result is deliberately mismatched: whitewashed alcoves in room 4 (Jean-Baptiste Fastrez), a nautical mural full of mermaids and octopuses in room 15 (Thomas Defour & Antoine Grulier), green mosaic tiles and moody lighting in room 5 (Claire Lavabre & Adrien Goubet). A 200-square-meter rooftop, a sea-facing bistro, and an audiophile bar powered by a high-fidelity Palladium Audio system round out the package.
