Le Barn
Campsite chic meets country-house warmth. Raw wood, Barbour-fabric curtains, Original BTC ceramic light fixtures, and BE-Pôles wall art keep things deliberately simple. The crowd is mostly stylish Parisians on weekend escape — lots of families, dogs everywhere, and an easy informality that you don't get at the region's palace hotels.
Room 740 has a large balcony with panoramic views and comes highly recommended by guests.
Why It Matters
Created by hotelier Edouard Daehn and French-American entrepreneur William Kriegel (owner of the equestrian estate), with interior design by Be-Pôles and architecture by CV2A. The old windmill on the property was converted into the spa. Yoga is included in the room rate. No set check-out time on Sundays. Guests can store their gear (bikes, golf clubs, fishing rods, boots) between visits — the hotel effectively functions as a recurring country retreat.
A former equestrian estate turned 4-star countryside hotel, 45 minutes from Paris. Two 1950s barns with red sheet metal roofs sit inside the 200-hectare La Cense estate, redesigned by Parisian studio Be-Pôles into 73 rooms of pared-back Shaker-inspired minimalism. Horses graze just outside your window. A restaurant, spa, permaculture vegetable garden and a full roster of outdoor activities make it closer to a self-contained village than a hotel.

On Property
How you'll actually spend your days.
Organised archery sessions available on the estate, typically on a schedule rather than on-demand.
Rowing boat trips (barque) on the estate pond.
Available at extra cost. Can be arranged through the hotel.
Fishing on the estate's pond. Equipment storage is provided for return guests who want to leave their rods between visits.
Guests explore the adjacent Rambouillet forest in search of mushrooms, deer, and seasonal wildlife. Unguided — the forest starts right at the property boundary.
Fleet includes regular bikes, e-bikes, electric cargo bikes, and children's Woom bikes in all sizes. Guests can cycle the estate, the Véloscénie route (Paris to Mont-Saint-Michel), or gravel trails around the Chevreuse Valley.
The GR1 (Île-de-France tour) and GR655 (long-distance Santiago de Compostela route) both pass through or near the estate. The surrounding Rambouillet forest has trails of all lengths.
The property backs directly onto Haras de la Cense, widely regarded as one of France's top equestrian centers. Over 90 horses on the estate. Guests can book personalised rides, introductory sessions on foot, or pony walks for young children. Must be booked separately through Haras de la Cense.
Petanque, badminton, croquet, football, frisbee, Mölkky — all available on the grounds.
On weekends in high season, the hotel organises Mini Olympics, after-lunch forest walks, and other group activities for families and children.
Yoga classes run regularly on the estate — included in the room rate. Outdoor sessions when weather allows.
