Le Bois des Chambres
Art-nature retreat. Deliberately quiet, no televisions, eco-first ethos with biomass heating and compressed-straw insulation. Rooms feel like creative residences rather than standard hotel boxes — curtains defining the spaces, dried flower installations on the ceilings, colour palettes shifting from deep earth tones on the ground floor to bright white under soaring cathedral ceilings upstairs.
Book the Garden Rooms if they're available — the bed-in-a-hut-on-stilts concept is as wild as it sounds, and completely private.
Why It Matters
The hotel is the residential arm of the Domaine de Chaumont-sur-Loire, which draws 500,000+ visitors a year to its Château, 32-hectare park, and world-famous International Garden Festival. Staying here is the only way to sleep inside the domain's grounds. Le Grand Chaume holds 2 Gault&Millau toques (14/20) and operates with an all-Loire wine list.
Opened in 2022 as part of the Domaine Régional de Chaumont-sur-Loire, Le Bois des Chambres is a converted farmstead turned 4-star art-and-nature hotel. Architects Patrick Bouchain and Loïc Julienne left the original stone buildings intact and dropped two contemporary lodges alongside them — forms that shadow the old silhouette but use thoroughly modern materials. The result: 39 individually decorated rooms with no TVs, oversized 2m×2m alcove beds, and garden views in every direction. The visual showstopper is Le Grand Chaume, a thatch-flower restaurant whose interior sports an electric-blue ceiling pierced by white-arrow 'comets' — equal parts Loire valley barn and contemporary art installation.

How you'll actually spend your days.
The hotel grounds include an orchard, aromatic herb garden, flower beds, a pond (with koi carp, frogs, and moorhens), and espalier-lined pathways. All designed to be walked through as part of the stay experience — from car park to restaurant, restaurant to room, room to stilted bed-cabin.
The hotel hosts rotating works by internationally recognised artists throughout the year, in dialogue with the broader Domaine arts programme. Past artists have included Quayola, Luzia Simons, Stéphane Guiran, Bob Verschueren and Juan San Juan Rebollar.
The Domaine's flagship annual event — running April 19 to November 2, 2025 (theme: 'Once upon a time, in the garden'). Since 1992, it has invited landscape designers and architects from around the world to create temporary garden installations across the estate. Staying at Le Bois des Chambres puts guests 300 metres from the entrance.
The hotel has 'Accueil Vélo' certification and sits within 5km of the Loire à Vélo cycling route. Bicycle parking is available on-site. Shuttle connections from Onzain station to the Domaine allow car-free arrival for cyclists.
The hotel offers two atypical meeting spaces totalling 80 m², suitable for seminars and corporate off-sites. Available throughout the year.
The Domaine's south entrance is 300 metres from the hotel. The 32-hectare estate includes the Château (15th–19th century), stables, formal park, the International Garden Festival gardens, and year-round contemporary art and photography exhibitions. Over 500,000 visitors per year. The hotel offers guests a 25% discount on Domaine admission.
