Le Clos Alice
Classic French manor elegance. Antique furniture sourced from auction houses, herringbone parquet flooring, marble tables, and gold-leaf details throughout. Think refined country house, not flashy resort. The hosts live on property and run a genuinely personal operation.
Book a river-view suite rather than a garden-view one — the Cuisance views are far more atmospheric
Why It Matters
One of the only 5-star properties in the Jura wine region, selected by both Michelin Guide and Tablet Hotels. Arbois is the capital of Jura wines — home to the oldest AOC appellation in France and the birthplace of Louis Pasteur — and Le Clos Alice is the most serious accommodation base in the area. The restaurant menu, overseen by Dijon chef David Zuddas, leans hard into regional terroir: Bresse fowl, Comté, trout from Les Planches.
Le Clos Alice is the former summer residence of the Countess of Broissia, a fully restored 18th-century manor house sitting on the banks of the Cuisance river, just outside the wine-growing town of Arbois. Owners Thierry and Alexandre Speitel-Gotz have kept the bones intact — original stone walls, gilt furnishings, working fireplaces — while bringing the comfort level firmly into the present. It's intimate by design: six individually decorated suites, a gourmet restaurant open to the public on weekend evenings, a small spa with sauna and hammam, and a seasonal outdoor pool.

How you'll actually spend your days.
The concierge can organise guided or self-guided cycle tours through the region's vineyards and villages.
The hotel can point guests toward trails into the Jura forests and the Reculée des Planches (Tufs waterfall), with karst formations and the Cirque du Fer à Cheval. The Hérisson waterfalls (including the 65m Saut de l'Éventail) are also accessible.
The hosts can organise visits to Arbois wine producers. The Arbois AOC is the oldest appellation in France, and the region produces the rare and distinctive Vin Jaune, Vin de Paille, Macvin, Chardonnay, Savagnin, Trousseau and Poulsard. Nearby villages include Pupillin, Château-Chalon and Montigny-les-Arsures.
Tastings and workshops can be arranged, focusing on Comté, Mont d'Or and other regional cheeses alongside Jura wines. Available through the concierge, particularly for seminar groups.
The hotel's grounds include a park and garden running along the Cuisance river. A peaceful place to walk, particularly at dusk when the light on the water is at its best.
The seasonal outdoor pool is open from approximately May to October. Sun deck with loungers and chilled towels available poolside.
The preserved home of Louis Pasteur is a short walk from the hotel — about 5 minutes on foot. Arbois was the scientist's home town, and the house is a genuine museum of his life and work.
