Why It Matters
The only 5-star hotel on Île d'Oléron, sitting directly on Rémigeasse beach. Its 1965 Le Corbusier-inspired architecture was fully renovated into a design property, and the wellness center — heated pool, jacuzzi, sauna, hammam — faces the ocean under a large glass roof. As of 2026, the spa is also open to non-guests, making it a destination in its own right.
Le Grand Large sits right on Rémigeasse beach on Île d'Oléron — one of France's sunniest Atlantic islands. Built in 1965 with Le Corbusier-inspired architecture, renovated in 2011, and earning its fifth star when it joined the Boutique Hotels Collection in 2022, this 31-room property trades on location above all else: forest and dunes on one side, the open Atlantic on the other. The hotel's concierge organizes sea outings by sailboat or motorboat, with or without a skipper. Points of interest include Île d'Aix, Île de Ré, Fort Boyard, and the Gironde estuary.
At the island's northern tip in Saint-Denis-d'Oléron, the Chassiron lighthouse has 224 steps to climb for views of Île de Ré and the surrounding islands. A popular half-day excursion from the hotel.
For 2026, Le Grand Large has an artistic partnership with painter Katell Le Jeune, whose works are displayed throughout the hotel spaces. A rotating programme of art collaborations is a regular feature of the hotel's identity.
