Le Manoir aux Quat'Saisons
Quintessentially English manor house with a strong French sensibility — think flagstone floors, beamed ceilings, roaring fires, chintz cushions, and Provençal lavender paths. Formal but never stuffy. The gardens are the heart of everything here.
Book a room with a private terrace and have breakfast there rather than the restaurant — it's one of the quieter pleasures of the place
Why It Matters
Britain's only country house hotel to hold two Michelin stars continuously for over 40 years. Founded by Raymond Blanc OBE in 1984. Also holds a Green Michelin Star for sustainability and three Michelin Keys. The kitchen garden grows over 70 varieties of herbs and hundreds of vegetable species that supply the restaurant daily. Has trained 34 chefs who went on to earn their own Michelin stars, including Heston Blumenthal and Marco Pierre White.
Raymond Blanc's honey-stone 15th-century manor house in the Oxfordshire countryside has held two Michelin stars every single year since it opened in 1984 — the only country house hotel in Britain to manage that. The 32 rooms are each wildly different, designed around Blanc's travels and memories, and the two-acre kitchen garden feeds the restaurant directly. It's really more of a restaurant with extraordinarily good rooms than a hotel in the traditional sense. No pool, no gym, no spa — or at least not until the grand reopening in summer 2027 after an extensive £36 million redevelopment.
