From the outside, Le Monde looks exactly like what it is: a handsome Georgian building on Edinburgh's George Street, solidly New Town, solidly Scottish. Step inside and the story changes fast. All 18 rooms are themed after global cities — Cairo, Tokyo, New York, Casablanca, Reykjavik — and each is decorated to genuinely conjure the place, not just slap a flag on the wall. The result is one of Edinburgh's most distinctive small hotels, sitting above a lively cocktail bar and the basement Shanghai nightclub.

Step up to 32m2 and six different city themes: Atlantis, Berlin, Dublin, Milan, Paris, and Reykjavik. The extra space shows. Dublin has its own cosy bar snug. Milan floods the room with natural light through three skylights and a mirrored wall. Paris goes full Moulin Rouge — burgundy and pink, ornate gold furniture, a separate dressing room. The Atlantis room has a tropical fish tank above the bed, which is either your best night's sleep or your strangest. All have king beds convertible to twins, a separate bathtub and rainfall shower, and the same full amenity kit as Superior rooms.

The top category at 42m2, with six themes — Cairo, Casablanca, Los Angeles, New York, Sydney, and Tokyo — plus a separate seating area and bathrooms that each have their own twist. Cairo has a double sunken bath and a wrought-iron banister leading up to it. New York pulls off an exposed-brick loft look with a dual shower. Tokyo keeps it dark-lacquered with ceiling-mounted TV and sunken bath. Los Angeles goes Hollywood glamour with white leather furniture and a bath for two. Casablanca uses carved dark wood, painted screens, and a large Moroccan lamp to solid effect. These are genuinely spacious rooms by Edinburgh's standards.

The entry-level category comes in five city themes — Barcelona, Beijing, Havana, Monaco, and Rio — each around 24m2. These are compact but done with flair. Barcelona has a bay-window seat overlooking Rose Street. Beijing features a hand-painted dragon and slate bathroom. Havana goes for lime-wash walls, dark wood, and a free-standing rainfall shower. All have queen beds with Egyptian cotton, a rainfall shower over the bathtub, minibar, 42" plasma TV, and complimentary VIP entry to Shanghai Club.
