Le Refuge de Solaise
Industrial-alpine chic. The 1940s cable car heritage is everywhere — knotty wood-paneled walls, stone, industrial lamps — but layered with wool, velvet, leather, and crisp white linens. Rustic bones, genuinely luxurious finishes.
Book the gondola evening slots on Fridays and Saturdays (7–10:30pm) if arriving late in winter — outside school holiday periods only
Why It Matters
It holds the title of highest hotel in France at 2,551m. The building is the original upper station of Val d'Isère's first ski lift, built between 1939 and 1942. The gondola-only access in winter means after 4:30pm you're completely cut off from the village below — a genuine rarity in ski hospitality. The sun rises two hours earlier and sets three hours later than in the valley, making for absurdly long golden hours.
Le Refuge de Solaise is the highest hotel in France, perched at 2,551 meters inside a converted 1940s cable car station at the summit of the Solaise gondola above Val d'Isère. You get here by gondola only in winter — no road, no taxi, no walking in. Once the lifts close at 4:30pm, the mountain is entirely yours. The hotel spans 16 rooms, 4 apartments sleeping up to 18, a dormitory for groups, a myBlend-partnered spa with a 25-meter pool, and three dining concepts including a panoramic-terrace restaurant serving authentic Savoyard cuisine.
