Les Roches
Maritime luxury meets art-gallery-by-the-sea. The nautical design language (ship-cabin rooms, upper-deck dining) is executed with real finesse rather than kitsch. Think clean lines, noble materials, curated contemporary art, and a palpable sense of coastal history.
Book La Langouste sur le Toit early — it's open every evening except Tuesday and fills quickly at sunset
Why It Matters
One of the oldest luxury addresses on the Côte d'Azur — Thomas Mann, Humphrey Bogart, Jean Cocteau, Christian Dior, and Winston Churchill all stayed here. The restaurant L'Oursin now holds a Michelin star under Chef Antoine Gras. The hotel is a Relais & Châteaux member. Head Sommelier Magali Delalex won the Michelin Guide's Best Sommelier of 2024 award.
Hotel Les Roches is a thoroughly reimagined Côte d'Azur institution that first opened as 'Roches Fleuries' in the 1930s. Perched on the rocky inlets of Peire Gouerbe above Aiguebelle Bay, the hotel was completely rebuilt under architect Jean-Baptiste Pietri and reopened in June 2025 — all 40 rooms and suites designed like ship's cabins, clad in ornate woodwork and terrazzo, with uninterrupted Mediterranean views. It's also a serious gallery: works by Michelangelo Pistoletto, Ma Desheng, and Maki Ohkojima (who painted bespoke murals) appear everywhere from the lobby to the poolside pergola.

On Property
How you'll actually spend your days.
The hotel operates as a full-time gallery. Works by Michelangelo Pistoletto, Ma Desheng, Maki Ohkojima, Jean-Daniel Lorieux, Romain Barré, Vladimir Zbynovsky, Loris Cecchini, and others are displayed throughout — lobby, patio, rooms, poolside pergola, and rooftop garden. No need to leave the property to see serious contemporary art.
The sandy beach of Aiguebelle is approximately 200 metres from the hotel by foot. Public beach — no private section — but the walk is short and the beach itself is one of the calmer ones on this stretch of the Var coast.
Breakfast can be served in-room or on the terrace with panoramic sea views. Buffet and à la carte options available daily from 7:30 AM to 10:30 AM.
The outdoor Roches Pool sits directly beside the Bar des Roches, angled toward the Îles d'Or (Levant, Port-Cros). Sun beds and deckchairs around the pool. The surrounding horizon is all open sea — genuinely feels like you're swimming on the waterline.
The hotel runs a complimentary shuttle to Le Lavandou town centre. Given August coast-road traffic and parking scarcity, this is practically essential rather than just convenient.
