Lion Sands Game Reserve
Classic African luxury with genuine conservation soul. Each lodge has its own personality — River Lodge is warm and social, Ivory Lodge is hushed and exclusive, Narina is elevated and artistic, Tinga is family-ready. The treehouses (Chalkley, Kingston, Tinyeleti) add a genuinely adventurous edge that most luxury safari properties can't match.
Dry season (May–September) offers the best game viewing as vegetation thins and animals concentrate around water — August and September are particularly strong
Why It Matters
The only private reserve with land in both Sabi Sand and Kruger National Park simultaneously, giving access to two distinct ecosystems and a wider wildlife corridor. Non-migratory Big Five populations mean guaranteed game all year. The Sabie River has the highest recorded density of leopards in Africa — sightings here are frequent, not lucky.
Lion Sands is the only private game reserve spanning both the Sabi Sand Nature Reserve and Kruger National Park, with 13 miles of exclusive Sabie River frontage and 12,400 hectares of wilderness. Four distinct lodges and two private residences sit along the river, each with a different vibe — from the social 18-room River Lodge to the ultra-intimate 8-suite Ivory Lodge. The reserve has been in the More family since the 1930s, and that four-generation ownership shows: this is a place run by people who genuinely care about the land.

How you'll actually spend your days.
Watch resident artists transform daily wildlife encounters into original works — painting and creating in real time during golden hour. Available at Narina Lodge and Ivory Lodge. The works produced are for sale.
Over 300 bird species recorded within the reserve. The Sabie River corridor is prime habitat for water-associated species. The bird hide at River Lodge offers a quiet dedicated spot for observation. Peak birdwatching season is October to April.
Guided visits to local communities for genuine, hands-on engagement. Not a tour — guests participate in community projects, creating real impact beyond the wildlife experience.
Photography workshops with specialists covering camera settings, composition, and animal behaviour. Learn to capture Big Five encounters properly. Available at River Lodge and Tinga Lodge.
Armed field guide-led walks revealing the smaller world vehicles can't reach — tracks, insects, birds, plants. Walks run 1–2 hours and operate based on weather, wildlife activity, and guest fitness. Minimum age 16; health restrictions apply.
Morning and late afternoon/evening open-vehicle game drives across 12,400 hectares where Sabi Sand meets Kruger National Park. Each drive has a dedicated field guide and tracker, max 6 guests per vehicle for intimate encounters. Morning drives include a coffee stop in the bush; afternoon drives end with sundowners at sunset. Drives run approximately 3 hours each.
Soar above the reserve and over the Mpumalanga escarpment, tracing ancient gorges, cascading waterfalls, and Blyde River Canyon — one of the world's great geological wonders. Ends with a private mountaintop picnic with no one else in sight.
A structured kids' programme running at River Lodge and Tinga Lodge for children 10 and older, covering bush scavenger hunts, age-appropriate game drives, and hands-on wildlife learning. Designed so parents can do adult activities without compromise.
Remote bush location with minimal light pollution means genuinely spectacular night skies. Available from the treehouses and during evening game drives. The reserve's telescope on deck allows close-up constellation and planet viewing.
Spend a night in Chalkley, Kingston, or Tinyeleti Treehouse — open-air structures raised above the bush with a comfortable bed, gourmet picnic, and lanterns. No roof. Wildlife moves below you through the night. Booked as an add-on to any lodge stay. Kingston is the most renowned; Chalkley is the most popular.
