Liu Men Melaka
Colonial art deco meets Peranakan chic. Black-and-white floors, marble-topped tables, antique ceiling fans, bursts of colour from hand-painted crockery and tilework. Think family heirlooms on display alongside Smart TVs — the old and the new coexisting without fighting.
Room 001 sits next to the lift and the courtyard restaurant — ask for a different room if noise is a concern
Why It Matters
One of very few heritage properties in Malacca's UNESCO World Heritage zone that actually lives inside the historic fabric of the city rather than just adjacent to it. The Michelin Guide selected it; Trip.com rates it #1 among 4-star hotels in Melaka. The name itself — Liu Men, meaning 'Six Doors' — is a direct nod to the six original shophouse entrances.
Six pre-war shophouses on Jalan Tokong — each housing a different family — were merged into a single compound after the Japanese Occupation ended in 1945, then converted into a 30-room boutique hotel that opened in 2019. The Pang family (of Mamee–Double Decker fame) did the restoration, keeping the original cast-iron spiral staircase intact and threading colonial bones, art deco tilework, and Peranakan woodwork through every room. There's no pool. There's no gym. What you get instead is one of the most photogenic lobbies in Malaysia, staff who feel like they actually know you, and a location that puts Cheng Hoon Teng Temple literally 47 metres from your door.
