Lumeria Maui, Educational Retreat Center
Historic plantation estate meets wellness school. Quiet, intentional, slightly spiritual. No TVs in rooms. Upcountry location means cooler air and green surroundings rather than beach-front buzz. The kind of place people either love deeply or find a bit too earnest.
You must enroll in at least one daily class to stay overnight — this is the retreat center's standing rule, not optional
Why It Matters
One of Hawaii's few genuine retreat centers with real educational programming — yoga, meditation, horticulture, Hawaiian culture, dance, and metaphysical studies — not just a hotel with a yoga mat. The 1910 plantation estate setting is genuinely beautiful, and the Wellness Spa menu is unusually sophisticated, pulling in traditional Hawaiian healing (Lomi Lomi, Pohaku), crystal healing, shamanic sound ceremonies, and CBD massage under one roof.
Lumeria sits on a 5.6-acre historic estate in Upcountry Maui — originally the Fred C. Baldwin Memorial Home, built in 1910 and extensively renovated in 2010. It is not a hotel and makes no bones about it. You come here to take classes: sunrise yoga, organic farming lessons in the gardens, meditation with a healer, Hawaiian cultural studies. The 24 rooms are tucked into a plantation compound with local artwork throughout, views ranging from lush courtyard gardens to the Pacific Ocean, and a saltwater pool on the grounds. A farm-to-table restaurant, The Wooden Crate, rounds things out.
