Book cave spa treatments in advance — therapists are external specialists and slots fill fast

Why It Matters

Founders Ana and Pedro built this around Pedro's ancestral family land. Ana spent over a year researching vernacular architecture across the region, and it shows: the stonework styles on different cottages deliberately reflect different centuries. The cave spa — a natural grotto reached by stone steps lit with candles — is genuinely unlike anything else in Portugal. The pool is carved from 10 massive stone blocks, hand-extracted from a quarry with diamond wire. And the poolside kiosk is a restored 1970s Lisbon street kiosk that Ana sourced from the city council. Every detail is a story.

Luz Charming Houses is a one-of-a-kind boutique hotel built on the bones of a long-abandoned hamlet in the Portuguese countryside, just a short walk from Fátima's famous Shrine of Our Lady. Founded by architect Ana Alves and her husband Pedro Augusto Silva — whose family has owned this land for generations — the property is a living tribute to the vernacular architecture of the Fatima region: 15 individually designed terra-cotta cottages, each one telling a different story through its stonework, its windows, its textures. The communal Mother House anchors the village, with a fireplace lounge, honesty bar, grocery stocked with local products, and a dining room that makes breakfast feel like a ritual. It's a place where you come to slow down, whether you're a pilgrim or just a tired Lisbonite in need of a reset.
