Maiensäss Hotel Guarda Val
Rustic Alpine authenticity meets quiet luxury. Think centuries-old timber walls, cocoon beds, open fires, and stargazing bathtubs — not gilded chandeliers. The atmosphere is genuinely cosy rather than performatively so. Strong nature-immersion ethos with zero pretension.
Book the Stailetta if budget allows — it's essentially a private chalet with its own sauna under a glass dome
Why It Matters
One of Switzerland's most distinctive hotel concepts: 50 rooms spread across 11 genuinely historic Maiensäss lodges, each room individually designed. The gourmet restaurant holds 1 Michelin star and 16 Gault Millau points. The spa (Guarda Sana) occupies a converted hay barn and offers whey baths in outdoor wooden tubs on a wildflower meadow. The annual Sporzer Gourmet Safari — where the entire hamlet turns into an open-air multi-course dinner under the stars — is the stuff of food legend.
Eleven ancient barns and stables — some up to 300 years old — spread across the tiny hamlet of Sporz at 1,600m above sea level, about 3km above Lenzerheide. This is not one building with a lobby. It's a whole little village of sun-blackened larch and granite, with creaking floorboards and fires that actually crackle. The interior of each lodge has been completely rebuilt with modern comforts, but the historical exteriors are untouched. Run personally by hosts Bettina Arpagaus and Philip Arnold.

How you'll actually spend your days.
Weekly guided tours into the surrounding Graubünden landscape — format changes each week. Could be a sunrise hike, a forage walk, a wildlife observation. Check the 'experience wall' at reception on arrival.
The 18-hole Lenzerheide Golf Course is approximately 5km from the hotel. Adjacent golf course noted in property descriptions.
155+ miles of scenic hiking and cycling trails accessible directly from Sporz. The hotel provides packed lunches assembled from the breakfast buffet for day hikes.
The Lenzerheide Bike Kingdom trail network starts essentially from the hotel. One of the premier mountain bike destinations in Switzerland, with trails across multiple difficulty levels.
Guided mushroom foraging excursions into the forests around Lenzerheide with resident expert Rosemarie Kuhn. Seasonal (late summer/autumn). Part of the Mushroom Picking Art package in August.
An eight-station outdoor course designed for couples. You get blindfolded, led along, balance on beams, leave things behind on bridges, and whisper under trees. Genuinely playful rather than cheesy. Included in the Time for Two package or bookable separately.
Direct ski slope access from the hotel. The Arosa Lenzerheide ski area is one of the larger ski resorts in the Swiss Alps. Free ski shuttle provided.
The entire hamlet of Sporz transforms into an open-air multi-course dinner on December 28 each year. Chefs cook at stations around the village — fire kitchen on the Crap Naros terrace, seafood on the Sporzer Bar terrace, desserts in the wine cellar, and more. All with matching drinks under the stars. CHF 260/person including drinks; children under 10 free.
At 1,600m with minimal light pollution, the Sporz sky is exceptional. The hotel offers telescope sessions to observe the night sky above the hamlet.
Early morning guided walks with hunter Stefan Ziltener to observe deer, chamois, and other alpine wildlife in their habitat. Part of the Wild & Forest package in September.
