Maison Volver
Bohemian, vintage, deliberately homey — southern French sun filtered through flea-market finds and art gallery walls
Ask for a ground-floor room if stairs are an issue — the hotel has a few and staff can assist with luggage regardless
Why It Matters
One of the few genuinely character-filled small hotels in Arles that isn't either generic three-star or corporate luxury. The founders conceived it as a 'motionless travel' — each room drops you somewhere slightly different. The hotel also doubles as a rotating art gallery, has an in-house wellness practitioner, and runs a separate countryside Mas in the Camargue 14km away.
Maison Volver is a former neighborhood café — the Bar Américain — that Carole and Florence, two longtime friends, rescued and turned into an 18-room bohemian hotel. The rooms are genuinely individual: terrazzo floors from the 1950s, Murano lamps, vintage furniture mixed with modern design, kimonos hanging from hooks, linen sheets in faded colors, and wallpapers that lean firmly toward Almodóvar. The ground-floor restaurant spills onto a sidewalk terrace and runs a tapas menu built around seasonal Provençal produce and local wines.

How you'll actually spend your days.
The hotel curates regional escapes into the Camargue — the wetland reserve practically at Arles' doorstep. Options include cycling, horseback riding, 4x4 excursions, and boat trips through the marshes. Flamingo and horse watching, ornithological visits, and trips to Beauduc beach (a kite-surfing hotspot) are all part of the offering.
A carefully curated selection of local products on-site — the hotel's own small épicerie stocking regional goods from the Camargue and Provence.
The hotel functions as an active gallery space with rotating exhibitions, primarily photography. Past shows have featured work tied to the Rencontres d'Arles festival, Camargue landscapes, and emerging photographers. Exhibitions run for weeks at a time and are open to hotel guests and the public.
Not an activity per se, but the hotel's sister property: a 200m² farmhouse (Mas) 14km from Arles in the heart of the Camargue Regional Natural Park, on the Vaccarès road. Sleeps up to 8 people across 4 bedrooms with private bathrooms, plus a fully equipped kitchen and large living room. There's also an independent 150m² duplex with private terrace. Ideal for a countryside escape paired with a city stay.
