Maja Hotel Kyoto, in the heart of the Nakagyo district, is unusual for this customarily traditional city. The vision of Finnish designer Harri Koskinen, the Maja’s atmosphere is one of inviting, soft wood tones making for clean, cozy spaces. “Maja,” in fact, is Finnish for “hut;” this Maja’s accommodations are of two sizes: “sleep-in” or “walk-in” compartments, which offer exactly the right amount of space for one or two, all inside a design shaped like a house, lending a sense of expansiveness beyond their raw square footage. Bathrooms are shared by guests, and all toiletries, slippers and linens are supplied. Continental breakfasts are available at Maja’s Cafe Aalto.
