Why It Matters
One of the Malmaison brand's flagship northern UK properties, set in a characterful Victorian building with a genuine personality — not a cookie-cutter hotel experience. The Signature Suite's 'George the hippo' and surrealist décor have become somewhat legendary among regulars.
Malmaison Leeds occupies a restored Victorian former bus depot on the corner of Swinegate and The Calls — and yes, the building's heritage shows in the bones of the place. Bold Art Deco interiors, moody lighting, and unapologetically loud colours make this feel nothing like a corporate chain, even though it is one. It's a 100-room upscale boutique with a well-regarded brasserie and bar, a short five-minute walk from Leeds train station. No spa here (Leeds is not one of the Malmaison spa locations), no pool, and no on-site parking — but the city-centre location compensates for all of that.

This is the one people come back for. The 'surrealism suite' is loud, colourful, and deliberately eccentric — Art Deco furnishings, two plasma screens, a monsoon shower, a full bath, and a separate lounge with fireplace. There's also George the hippo and other quirky ornaments tucked around the suite. It's not subtle, and that's entirely the point.
KingSingle Club Room
A compact but well-designed solo room. Comes with a small double bed, en-suite bathroom with shower over bath, flat screen TV, bathrobe and slippers, and a coffee machine. All standard Mal touches included — moody lighting, quality toiletries, and nibbles.
