Mamula Island
Minimalist heritage meets mid-century cool. Raw Cevsky stone walls, solid oak, aged brass, organic textiles, and abstract art throughout. Berlin studio weStudio designed the interiors; MCM Architecture led the architectural concept. The arch motif of the original fortress runs through everything — a strong sense of place without being a museum piece.

Why It Matters
Named to Condé Nast Traveler's Best New Hotels in the World 2024 Hot List and winner of the AHEAD Europe Best Suites Award 2023. Banyan Tree's first hotel in Europe. Completely private island in a UNESCO World Heritage Site — you can't walk here, drive here, or stumble upon it accidentally.
A 19th-century Austro-Hungarian fortress on a private island at the entrance to Montenegro's Bay of Kotor — now one of the most unusual hotel concepts in Europe. Reached only by boat or helicopter, the fully restored fort opened in 2023 and joined Banyan Tree's portfolio. It packs 32 rooms and suites, three restaurants, four bars, a 748 sqm spa, three pools, and a private pebble beach into its circular stone walls. The fort was originally built in 1852 by Austro-Hungarian general Lazar Mamula, later served as an Italian prison camp during WWII, and sat abandoned for decades. Seven years of reconstruction followed, with sustainability baked in: the 170-year-old cisterns now handle water recovery, glass is recycled on-site, and both food and furnishings are locally sourced.
