Conservatorium, Amsterdam
Architecturally bold, calm-toned luxury. Piero Lissoni's interiors lean into calming neutrals and interesting spatial contradictions — a suspended staircase that goes nowhere, indoor trees dividing the lounge, a Ferrari-red hippo parked opposite reception. It's the kind of place where the architecture is the conversation starter. Not stuffy, not minimalist for minimalism's sake. The glass atrium is the social heart of the hotel.

Why It Matters
The building itself: originally the Rijkspostspaarbank (1897), then the Sweelinck Conservatory of Music, then a landmark hotel redesigned by Piero Lissoni. Taiko Cuisine has been one of Amsterdam's best Asian restaurants since 2014. Yotam Ottolenghi opened his first Dutch restaurant here in March 2026. Akasha Spa is the largest hotel spa in Amsterdam (1,000 sqm) and won Netherlands Best Hotel Spa 2025. The Penthouse's private rooftop terrace with panoramic Amsterdam views is genuinely hard to beat.
A 19th-century Dutch savings bank turned music school turned five-star hotel. The building — a Rijksmonument dating to 1897 — was transformed in 2011 by Italian architect Piero Lissoni into something that really shouldn't work on paper but absolutely does: soaring institutional ceilings, original wooden beams, and a glass-covered courtyard alongside razor-sharp contemporary design. In January 2026, the Conservatorium Hotel officially became Mandarin Oriental Conservatorium, Amsterdam, adding the group's legendary service infrastructure to a building that already had plenty going for it.
