Mandarin Oriental, Desaru Coast
Tropical modernist. Kerry Hill's signature language — natural timber, hand-selected stone, green roofs, open-air walkways threaded through rainforest — gives the property an almost pavilion-like quality. Low-density and deliberately quiet. 300-year-old banyan trees are part of the landscape design. Not a party resort.
Ask about dusky leaf monkeys — they occasionally appear at dawn and dusk in the trees, and the Dusky Monkey bar was named after 'Suri,' the monkey who watched over the resort's construction
Why It Matters
The final completed project of Kerry Hill Architects, one of Southeast Asia's most celebrated architecture firms. First Augustinus Bader spa in Southeast Asia. Featured in TIME's World's Greatest Places. Desaru's only all-suite ultra-luxury property, with every room having a private plunge pool. Named after the Malay word for 'village of soft palms.'
This is the final completed work of late architect Kerry Hill, and it shows. Forty-four suites and one four-bedroom pool villa sit within 128 acres of ancient rainforest on a 1.5 km stretch of South China Sea beach. Every unit starts at 105 sqm and comes with a private plunge pool, a courtyard, and a veranda looking out at either the jungle canopy or the ocean. The property rebranded from The Sirēya Desaru Coast to Mandarin Oriental on 30 January 2026, bringing the group's service standards and global loyalty network to what was already a seriously well-designed resort.
