Palace, Luzern
Belle Époque grandeur meets East Asian-inflected contemporary luxury. Pale Mediterranean colour palettes, oak parquet floors, circular brass chandeliers, wall panelling with ceiling mouldings. The MOzern brasserie occupies the original grand entrance hall. Furniture is modern Italian (Molteni), with subtle Asian craft touches in the details — wardrobe handles and the like. Intimate and character-rich rather than shiny-and-new.
Ask for a lake-facing room or suite — even mid-tier lake view rooms have terraces large enough for a sun lounger and chairs
Why It Matters
One of the few Mandarin Oriental properties in a genuinely historic building — officially designated a cultural asset of national importance (Conservation Grade B) in Switzerland. The 1906 building is irreplaceable, and the renovation preserved enough to feel real. Two restaurants hold a combined three Michelin stars: Colonnade (two stars, modern French) and Minamo (one star, Japanese omakase for just 8 diners). The rooms are among the largest in Lucerne. No pool — but there's the historic Seebad Luzern right on the lake nearby.
A genuine 1906 Belle Époque palace right on the shores of Lake Lucerne — this is not a new-build dressed up in period details. The building opened as the Palace Hotel Luzern on 7 May 1906, closed for years, then underwent an elaborate three-year restoration before reopening in late 2022 under Mandarin Oriental. Local architects Iwan Bühler Architekten and London's Jestico + Whiles handled the renovation, peeling back layers of paint from marble tiles and scagliola pillars under the hawk-like scrutiny of Luzern's Cultural Heritage Bureau. The result: 136 rooms and suites, three Michelin stars spread across two restaurants, and the spa brand Bellefontaine operating a small but refined wellness sanctuary.

How you'll actually spend your days.
Exceptional Suite guests have access to enhanced butler service that arranges tailored dining experiences and bespoke local excursions — boat trips on Lake Lucerne, visits to Mount Rigi by cogwheel railway, and beyond. Available on request.
The hotel facilitates access to Lake Lucerne boat excursions departing from the ferry terminal near the old town. Some boats serve lunch; the Swiss Travel Pass covers the fare. Mount Rigi, reachable by boat and cogwheel railway, is a particularly popular day trip.
Round-trip airport and city transfer arranged on request for Exceptional Suite guests. Available upon booking through the hotel.
The historic Seebad, built into the lake with two outdoor swimming pools, sun decks, bars and restaurants, is a short walk along the lakefront. First built in 1885, most recently renovated in 2010. Hotel guests are pointed here as there is no pool on-site.
