Qianmen
Heritage-immersive, quietly theatrical, and genuinely connected to local life — the opposite of a sealed luxury bubble. Ancient timber beams meet floor-to-ceiling glass; grey-tiled rooftops frame private garden courtyards. The vibe is reflective and low-key, not showy.
Request a butler escort on your first arrival — the hutong lanes are genuinely maze-like and easy to get turned around in
Why It Matters
Ranked No. 14 and winner of the Nikka Best New Hotel Award at The World's 50 Best Hotels 2025. Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star 2026. China's Best Hotel Spa 2025 (World Spa Awards). Condé Nast Traveler US and UK Hot List. One of the few luxury hotels anywhere that genuinely places guests inside a working historic neighbourhood rather than replicating one.
Mandarin Oriental Qianmen opened in September 2024 as MO's second Beijing address, and it could not be more different from its Wangfujing sibling. There is no lobby building, no corridors, no lifts. Instead, 42 individually restored siheyuan (traditional courtyard houses) are scattered across eight lanes of the Qianmen East Hutong Quarter — one of the oldest neighbourhoods in the city. Getting to the spa, restaurant, or reception means stepping into the alleyway and walking through a living hutong, past local residents and e-scooter deliveries. That is the point. The property spans Caochang Alley 3 through Alley 10, and 83% of the courtyard structures are original, dating back centuries. Some were former imperial inspector residences; one is now the Peking Mansion suite, converted from a courtyard that once belonged to a Tong Ren Tang pharmacy family.

How you'll actually spend your days.
Personal butler escorts available at any time for guests who'd prefer guidance through the maze-like alleyways between courtyards and hotel facilities. Also a buggy service for those with mobility needs.
Traditional tea ceremony experiences available through the Maple Lounge and the Tea House within the spa. Covers tea selection, preparation technique, and the history behind different Chinese teas.
Curated hutong neighbourhood experiences, including access to nearby historic sites and engagement with local community life around the Qianmen East Hutong Quarter.
Hosted in the Qiyuan Healing Space within the spa courtyard. Sessions use Tibetan singing bowls and large gongs to guide participants into deep relaxation and energetic balance.
Exploring the lanes on foot or by bike is genuinely encouraged. UNESCO World Heritage sites like the Forbidden City and Temple of Heaven are a short ride away. The hutong itself is pedestrian-friendly and shared with locals going about their daily lives.
600 sqm total event space in the heart of the hutong. The Mandarin Palace is a 255 sqm ballroom with natural light through a sustainable shade system (up to 180 guests reception-style). Zhengyang Mansion (290 sqm) transitions between indoor and courtyard for intimate dinners and weddings.
