Sanya
Tropical resort with strong wellness orientation. Contemporary interiors woven with Hainanese ethnic details — Li brocade textiles, Miao silver motifs — and scattered volcanic rock formations throughout the grounds. Laid-back beach chic, not formal city-hotel energy.
Book the morning tai chi session with Master Hu — he trained at the Shaolin Temple for 20+ years and it's a genuinely rare experience, not just a hotel activity box-ticker
Why It Matters
The Mandarin group's first mainland China hotel deliberately chose a resort format over a city tower, resulting in one of Hainan's most polished beachfront properties. The spa compound alone is extraordinary — nearly a third of a football pitch, with a licensed TCM doctor and an in-residence Shaolin master who teaches tai chi every morning. The property sits on an internationally protected coral beach, which keeps the snorkeling genuinely good right off the shore.
This is the Mandarin Oriental that breaks the mold. While the brand's DNA is usually urban towers in financial districts, the Sanya property goes full resort: 30 acres of tropical gardens on Coral Bay, a low-slung villa layout that sprawls rather than stacks, and South China Sea views from nearly everywhere on the property. Opened in 2009 as the group's first hotel in mainland China, it holds 296 rooms and some of the most ambitious spa infrastructure in Asia — 3,200 sq m — alongside a resident Shaolin kung fu master. The crowd here is overwhelmingly domestic Chinese, so non-Mandarin speakers should expect a different atmosphere than the brand's Western outposts.
