Manoir Ogygia
Romantic and intimate. Think candlelight, exposed timber, an old stove in the breakfast room, and very deliberate calm. Greek mythology runs through every room name and the hotel's identity. The garden pool and jacuzzi area feels more country retreat than spa hotel — loungers, cocoons, and a poolside bar under mature trees.
Book the Erato Suite for the rooftop terrace jacuzzi — the price jump from standard doubles (from €290 vs €220) is well worth it for a special occasion
Why It Matters
One of Belgium's more distinctive small hotels: the restaurant sits in the actual 19th-century castle next door (not the manor building), dinner includes wines and water in the price, and the Phyto 5 wellness institute uses Traditional Chinese Medicine principles for bodywork. Tablet Hotels listed. Also a 10-minute walk from Talbot House, one of the most moving WWI sites in Flanders.
Manoir Ogygia is a family-run boutique hotel that opened in April 2002, built from scratch in the park of the historic 19th-century Château van Merris — but designed so convincingly in manor style that you'd never guess it's new. Architect Luc Vandewynckel used reclaimed wood from a former hop storage warehouse and the adjacent castle to give it genuine warmth. Carmen Logie runs the front of house while her husband Kris heads the kitchen; it's a tight, personal operation with 9 rooms and 1 suite, each named after a Greek goddess and decorated entirely differently.
