Maximilian Hotel Prague
Czech design-forward boutique; art-forward without being precious, calm without being sleepy. Think Bauhaus-era Czech artworks, Sans Souci lighting, and a color palette that skews deep blue and warm brass rather than the ubiquitous gray-white of most European design hotels.
Room 206 has a balcony with a direct view of the illuminated St. Haštal Church at night — worth requesting specifically
Why It Matters
One of the few Prague boutique hotels where the restaurant (Brasserie Maximilian) and in-house spa (Planet Zen) are worth visiting regardless of whether you're a guest. The design is curated by Conran & Partners with Czech artworks on loan from the Museum of Decorative Arts — this isn't standard contract furniture.
Maximilian sits on Haštalské náměstí, a quiet square in Old Town facing the Gothic St. Haštal Church — far enough from the tourist crush of Old Town Square (8 minutes on foot) to feel like you found something, close enough that you're never far from anywhere. Spread across two historic 19th-century buildings, it packs 71 rooms designed by London studio Conran & Partners: deep blue tones, rattan cane headboards, oak joinery, terrazzo bathrooms, and artworks celebrating the Czech avant-garde including photomontages by Karel Teige. The Brasserie and Planet Zen Spa are both genuinely good — not just hotel-grade good.
