Why It Matters

One of only a small number of properties in the US to hold Forbes Five Stars for both the hotel and the spa simultaneously. Michelin 3 Keys (2025). Long home to the three-Michelin-starred Restaurant at Meadowood (destroyed in the 2020 Glass Fire, currently being redesigned). The Wine Center, led by published sommelier and educator Kelli A. White, is among the most serious wine education programs at any hotel in the country.

A 250-acre wine-country estate two miles outside downtown St. Helena, Meadowood operates somewhere between a private club and an intimate country hotel. The grounds spread from forested ridgelines through wooded canyons to the Napa River's edge, with 36 rooms and suites designed by the late architect Howard Backen in the lodge-meets-modern-California style he made famous across the valley. It holds Forbes Travel Guide Five Stars for both the hotel and spa — one of only a handful of properties in the country to achieve that double — plus Michelin 3 Keys and a Relais & Chateaux membership.

Cottage Room

The most intimate category at Meadowood, and still 415 sq ft including the large enclosed porch. An open floor plan combines the sitting area and bedroom, anchored by a wood-burning fireplace. French doors lead to a generous covered private patio that's usable year-round. The bathroom has a freestanding shower, single soaking tub, and vanity. A solid entry point into the property's pricing without sacrificing the core Meadowood experience.

Hill House

The flagship accommodation at Meadowood, perched on the wooded hillside next to the spa. The bedroom and expansive living room connect via floor-to-ceiling pocket doors. A sectional sofa anchors the living area around a stone hearth. Two furnished terraces — one with a fire pit and sectional, the other with an outdoor soaking tub and shower — make this feel more like a private villa than a hotel room. All 1,745 sq ft (indoor and outdoor combined).

The open floor plan feels like a classic Napa Valley cottage, with armoires, built-in headboards, and Lloyd Loom woven-paper chairs. Honed marble bathroom includes a large glass-walled shower and separate soaking tub. Private balcony outside. 420 sq ft indoors plus an average of 170 sq ft on the balcony.
