Memmo Alfama is the first boutique hotel to open in Lisbon's oldest and most storied neighborhood, tucked down a cobblestone alley lined with orange trees. The 42-room property occupies a lovingly restored 19th-century building — once a bakery and shoe-polish factory — with two original structures stitched together by architect Samuel Torres de Carvalho. Outside, a mural by celebrated street artist Vhils marks the entrance; inside, the aesthetic is contemporary Nordic minimalism with warm Portuguese soul: honey-toned wood floors, polished concrete bathrooms, six-pillow beds, and minibars stocked with Vidago water and Super Bock. The hotel is adults-only (16+) and the philosophy is deliberately un-hotel-like — guests check in when ready, staff know your name on arrival, and the whole place is calibrated to feel like a friend's very well-designed apartment in one of Europe's most atmospheric neighborhoods.

Clean-lined and contemporary rooms on the patio-facing side of the building. Views look out onto the hotel's entrance street and courtyard rather than the rooftops or river — these are the most affordable option and genuinely comfortable, just don't expect a postcard out the window.

The most spacious of the view-facing rooms. Wide, front-on views over Alfama's red rooftops merging with the Tagus River — and these are proper room-sized spaces, not the snug footprints of lower categories. Upgraded with a Nespresso machine, which most rooms don't have.

Mansard Room
Snug and romantic, these rooms sit under the eaves in the hotel's rooftop. No direct views — there's a wall in the way — but they're full of natural light and feel more like a chic attic apartment than a hotel room. The vibe is the point. Decor is warm neutrals, honey-toned wood floors, polished concrete bathroom with a Corian infinity sink and rainfall shower.

Like the Mansard Room but larger and with a king bed. Still on the rooftop under the eaves with no direct views — you step up a stair to peer over the parapet and see one of the best hotel views in the property. More romantic for the attic aesthetic than the standard mansard.
