Why It Matters
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places and a member of Historic Hotels of America since 1989, this is the oldest hotel on Waikiki Beach. It's also home to Waikiki's only oceanfront spa and the only beachfront hotel whose porte-cochère faces directly onto Kalakaua Avenue. The 125th anniversary in 2026 marked a full-property transformation that honored the original 1901 architecture.
The original First Lady of Waikiki, the Moana Surfrider opened on March 11, 1901 — the first hotel ever built on Waikiki Beach. A Beaux-Arts masterpiece with gleaming white columns, a grand porte-cochère on Kalakaua Avenue, and a century-old banyan tree shading its courtyard pool, it spans 600 feet of Waikiki's shoreline. A sweeping multi-phase renovation completed in 2025-2026 for the hotel's 125th anniversary refreshed all three wings while preserving the original Victorian bones.

Banyan Wing Guest Room
The original 1901 wing, renovated in November 2025. Architect Oliver G. Traphagen's Beaux-Arts design is preserved throughout — soaring columns, intricate crown molding — but with modern transitional furnishings and artwork. Rooms overlook the courtyard, the iconic banyan tree, or the ocean. The most historically atmospheric choice on the property.
Diamond Wing Guest Room
Originally opened as The Surfrider Hotel (incorporated into the Moana in 1952), this airy low-rise wing runs parallel to the beach. Half the rooms are oceanfront with the signature Surfrider rocking chair duos on the lanai; the other half face Kalakaua Avenue. The beach loft aesthetic uses vibrant colors and Hawaii-inspired artwork. Renovation debuting Spring 2026. Available in king or double-queen.
One-Bedroom Suite
Available across all three wings and tailored to the design language of each. All suites feature expansive living rooms, spa-inspired bathrooms, private lanais, and sweeping ocean or Diamond Head views. Premium suites were newly renovated alongside the broader wing refresh.
Presidential Suite
The top-of-the-house option in the Tower Wing. Features a full living and dining area, a bedroom with ocean-view lanai, and panoramic views across Waikiki and out to sea.
Tower Wing Guest Room
The Tower Wing is a 21-floor high-rise with the largest rooms on property and the best ocean-facing views. Renovated in Summer 2025, these rooms feature a custom curved seating and dining nook with an adjacent wet bar, a bespoke reading area, and floor-to-ceiling lanai doors that open onto private balconies with new outdoor furnishings. Every room in the Tower Wing has at least one private lanai. King and double-queen configurations available.
